Co. Down primary school receives special visit to mark reading efforts
St. Patrick’s Primary School in Holywood received a special visit from Cool FM breakfast show host Rebecca McKinney and interactive animal education company, Wee Critters after they embraced reading in aid of Cancer Fund for Children and our ReadOn campaign, supported by EUROSPAR and ViVOXTRA NI.
Cancer Fund for Children empower, connect and strengthen children, young people and families impacted by cancer. Our ReadOn campaign encourages primary and secondary school pupils to read more while raising funds in support of the charity’s vital services. This year, we ran a competition with Cool FM, giving one lucky school the chance to win a visit from Rebecca McKinney and a real-life Ollie the Owl, mascot to the ReadOn campaign.
“The staff and students at St. Patrick’s Primary School are avid supporters of our ReadOn campaign and we are absolutely delighted that we were able to mark their efforts with such a fun visit. This is the 25th year of ReadOn and we are so grateful to Rebecca McKinney and Wee Critters for coming on board to help us make this year’s activity extra special.
Schools across Northern Ireland love getting behind this initiative as it allows them to encourage reading in pupils while also raising money for a worthy cause.”

Each week in Northern Ireland, approximately three children and young people (aged 0-24) are diagnosed with cancer. The money raised through ReadOn will help Cancer Fund for Children provide emotional, social and therapeutic support so these children and their families don’t have to face their experience alone.
This year’s ReadOn campaign is sponsored by long term corporate partner, EUROSPAR and ViVOXTRA NI. The stores and staff have been supporting the charity since 2011, raising over £1.8 million.
“At EUROSPAR and ViVOXTRA we value community engagement, and ReadOn is a fantastic initiative to reach out to local schoolchildren and get them excited about reading, telling stories and engaging their imaginations. We were delighted to support the initiative alongside EUROSPAR’s own 25th anniversary celebrations. We send our congratulations to the winners at St. Patrick’s Primary School in Holywood.”
