Hospital Based Support

Hospital Based Support

Cancer Fund for Children is part of the regional Adolescent and Young Adult Service (AYA) for Northern Ireland, alongside a range of other charities and all Health Trusts.

Hospital Based Support is available at

The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, Belfast City Hospital and Cancer Centre, as well as all regional hospital sites, to support young people aged 13-24 years old diagnosed with cancer. We have two dedicated Youth Support Workers who work across these locations.

Our Youth Support Workers work alongside the wider hospital teams to help young people cope with the emotional and practical impact of cancer, and the isolation of having to spend time in hospital. This can be through individual support using creative and art-based activities, games or simply providing space to talk, tailoring this support to the needs and interests of young people.

We also run group activities that give young people the opportunity to meet others and share their experiences of cancer with each other, building peer connection and relationships whilst also having fun.

Wiktoria is 19 years old. She was born in Poland in 2003 and moved to Northern Ireland with her family aged 9. A year later, Wiktoria was diagnosed with leukaemia (ALL) after falling unwell during a family holiday.
