Rory McIlroy interviewed by Patrick Kielty on the Late Late Show

September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To help raise awareness, golfing superstar and friend of Cancer Fund for Children, Rory McIlroy was interviewed on the RTE Late Late Show on Friday 13th September.

Rory, who was in Co. Down for the Amgen Irish Open, was interviewed by host Patrick Kielty during the Pro-Am.  They played the first hole together and talked about Rory’s support of Cancer Fund for Children, particularly Daisy Lodge, our therapeutic short break centre for families impacted by cancer.

This year, Daisy Lodge celebrates its 10th birthday. Rory officially opened Daisy Lodge in back in 2014. Since then, Cancer Fund for Children has provided over 4,000 short breaks, allowing families to spend quality time together in a safe and supportive environment, far removed from hospital wards and treatment regimes.

Due to challenges with capacity and high demand, only 1 in 7 families from across the island of Ireland can currently avail of a therapeutic short break. This is why we are developing a second Daisy Lodge, in the beautiful surroundings of Cong, Co. Mayo. Early support from Rory McIlroy enabled the purchase of the site on the tranquil shores of Lough Corrib.

“For me, you look at these families that have been so unfortunate to have to deal with cancer. I visited the Cancer Fund for Children, and I decided I wanted to help fund a new facility for them because I saw the work that the staff does, I saw how appreciative that the families were that they had a place to go.

To be able to help in some small way to provide something for these families, its incredibly fulfilling.”

We would also like to thank the Leonard family who were interviewed by Patrick Kielty in the Late Late studio.  Isabelle (age 5) was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2020 and later relapsed.  She, her twin sister Molly and older sister Lucy (7) have been supported at home by Aoife, one of our Cancer Support Specialist. Aoife has provided the girls with informal one-to-one support to help them cope with the emotional impact of cancer.

Cancer Fund for Children is an all-island charity that supports children and young people aged 0-24 diagnosed with cancer and their families. Our vision is that no child should face cancer alone. Our services are available across all 32 counties and we provide flexible emotional, social and therapeutic support at home, in hospital and at our short break centre, Daisy Lodge in Co. Down and soon to be Daisy Lodge in Cong.
