Meet our New Cancer Support Specialist Lucy
Lucy Forde has joined Cancer Fund for Children as a Cancer Support Specialist for teenagers and young adults (TYAs) aged 14-24 years old
Lucy will be based at the Royal Victoria and City Hospitals in Belfast, providing social and emotional support to young people going through cancer treatment.
She will work closely with our Cancer Support Specialist Helen Patterson, who supports TYAs receiving inpatient or outpatient cancer treatment across Northern Ireland’s regional hospitals including the Ulster, Antrim Area, Craigavon Area and Altnagelvin Area Hospital.
We caught up with Lucy to learn more about her role and what she is looking forward to most about working with young people impacted by cancer.
“I offer teenagers and young adults individual support and also facilitate small group support sessions to help young people identify and express their emotions. These sessions are an opportunity for them to build their confidence and develop practical skills and tools to help them to cope with cancer. They also provide an opportunity for young people to connect with others in similar situations. Activities can range from learning a new language, arts and crafts, to games and movie nights. But most importantly, these sessions offer young people a listening ear and a chance to share their thoughts and/or worries.
I hope my role will help teenagers and young adults look at their time in hospital as a positive experience, and enable them to balance the ups with the downs. I look forward to providing opportunities and experiences that will not only bring smiles during difficult days but also help young people to be open and honest about how they are feeling and equip them with skills to build resilience.
I am excited to build relationships with amazing teenagers, young adults and their families! I also can’t wait to work alongside Cancer Fund for Children’s team of Cancer Support Specialists. I have some VERY exciting festive activities lined up for this autumn and winter in the hospitals which will give teenagers and young adults the chance to try something new whilst connecting with others.”
