Grace’s Story
Happy Birthday Grace who is celebrating her first birthday this October!
Little Grace was diagnosed with neuroblastoma just after she was born turning her parents, Laura and Daniel’s world upside down. She spent the first six months of her life in hospital undergoing chemotherapy treatment and although she faced many challenges Grace is now back home with her family.
To celebrate Amazing Grace’s birthday and to give back to the people, charities and medical staff that supported them Laura and Daniel are running 100 miles in October.
At the time we didn’t realise how much Cancer Fund for Children helped us. It is only now looking back that we appreciate how difficult things would have been without their support. There was so much information to take on board and we had no headspace to follow things up. Cancer Fund for Children really helped pick up the pieces.
When we were first told about Daisy Lodge it was a future plan. We thought someday when Grace will be well enough we will get there. However when the time came we didn’t realise how much we needed our short break. The setting is stunning, never mind the treatments and the food being made for you, all the games and the opportunity to meet other families. It was just so lovely.
We also found Cancer Fund for Children’s social events so welcoming. This was the first family outing we had ever had and we felt really comfortable taking Grace even though she had her feeding tube in and all her medicine to take. The ongoing support the charity offers is brilliant because you get to know people and see familiar faces. I really look forward to seeing our Cancer Support Specialist Lynn at these events.
Over the past year our family and friends have organised different events to raise money and awareness but Daniel and I were never able to. We could only follow from a distance. Now that Grace is home and we are able to do things together as a family we feel it’s the right time for us as parents to get out and do something to give back. Plus, we have signed up to run the Belfast City Marathon next May so it’s a good way to get us out training.
We have been amazed by people’s generosity and kindness. We cannot thank people, charities, doctors and nurses enough!
