The Challenge

Lace up those hiking boots and put your best foot forward this April to take on our Croagh Patrick Climb in aid of Cancer Fund for Children.

At an impressive height of 764m, Croagh Patrick, nicknamed ‘the Reek’, is an important site of pilgrimage in the stunning Co. Mayo and has long been seen as a holy mountain. It has a pyramid-shaped peak and overlooks Clew Bay, rising above the village of Murrisk, just outside of Westport.

Taking approx. 3-5 hours to complete, our amazing walkers will be rewarded by the glorious views from the summit: the Nephin Beg Mountain’s and the grey waters of Clew Bay glinting over the emerald islands. You will also be treated to food and refreshments on your return back to the car park!

Not only will it be an incredible personal accomplishment to take on such a challenge, but by stepping out and supporting Cancer Fund for Children to raise vital funds and awareness, you can help us on our mission to ensure that no child has to face cancer alone.

Every month across the island of Ireland, approximately 40 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer. With amazing people like you by our side, we can continue to offer the right support at the right time. It simply would not be possible without you.

So, are you ready to accept the challenge?

Key Event Details

> Starting time: Registration is from 9.00 – 10.00am with a group start at 10.15am.

> Meeting Point: The main car park at the foot of the trail. Car Parking is pay and display – we encourage participants to car share or use public transport!

> Walk length: The trail is approx. 7km in total from the main car park to the summit and back and can take anywhere between 3-5 hours to complete based on your fitness levels and how often you stop for breaks.

> Who can take part?: The challenge is open to everyone aged 18+. If you have any medical conditions, we please ask you check in with your doctor before proceeding to register. Given the difficulty of the challenge and mixed terrain, good fitness and mobility are essential.

> Challenge Difficulty: The climb is a tough one with a lot of incline right from the start, so we would class this as a medium to difficult challenge. If you are not much of a walker and want to take on the climb with us, we highly recommend you get out for some practice walks to build up your endurance levels.

> Safety: Mountain sports and hill walking can be dangerous and pose a risk to personal safety and all participants take part at their own risk. The mountain has steep inclines and rocky terrain, and is very open to the elements. We will have volunteers from the Order of Malta joining us on the day. We will also supply a list of recommended clothing / equipment to bring with you on the day in the weeks leading up to the event. Broken-in walking boots/shoes are highly recommended over trainers as they provide better ankle support. We ask that you please adhere to recommendations provided to ensure your safety and those of your fellow walkers. We kindly request no pets at the event.

> Fundraising: At Cancer Fund for Children, we organise events like this in order to raise vital funds and awareness to help ensure no child across the island of Ireland faces cancer alone. We simply could not do it without you. While your €25 registration fee will help us cover the costs of running the event, it is your fundraising that will go towards supporting children and young people, and their families, when they need us most. We ask you raise as much as you can for an incredible cause. Upon registering via iDonate, you will automatically be set up with an online fundraising page. Share it far and wide with family, friends and colleagues! Our Fundraising Team will also only ever be a phone call or email away for advice or to secure additional materials such as sponsorship forms.
