Maggie’s Story

 In Family Stories

13 year-old Maggie from Randalstown shared her story with us and why she is supporting Cancer Fund for Children and Rory Best in his Miles to Mayo campaign this September.

“My name is Maggie and I am 13. I enjoy going to the stockcars, shopping, the beach and listening to music. My favourite film is Legally Blonde.

I found out I had a Brain Tumour on the 9th October 2020, four days before my 13th birthday after falling down a few stairs.

My diagnosis made me feel sad and cross. I didn’t want to be diagnosed anymore. I found it frustrating as I was able to walk into the hospital then after my operation, I had to rely on others to help as I was very ‘wobbly’.

I think what Rory is doing is exciting and amazing! I hope it’s not too difficult! I belong to Randalstown Rugby Club and have had the opportunity to play at Ravenhill during half-time of one of the Ulster matches. I was very excited to get the chance to meet Rory Best.

I have stayed at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle and would love everyone with a cancer diagnosis to get the opportunity to stay there as it was so much fun.

So please let’s all support Rory in his Miles to Mayo.”

Rory’s campaign will support more children and young people like Maggie who have had to live with the impact of a cancer diagnosis. He will shine a light on the experiences of children and young people like Maggie by ‘walking a mile in their shoes’ or in this case, walking an epic 180 miles from Cancer Fund for Children therapeutic short break centre, Daisy Lodge in Newcastle Co. Down to the site of a proposed new Daisy Lodge in Co. Mayo.

You can answer Rory’s call by taking on your own challenge or donating to Cancer Fund for Children. For more information on how you can get involved, click here.
