Trek Borneo

Trek Borneo… the experience of a lifetime awaits

Are you ready for the trek that has it all? Tropical rain forests, magnificent misty blue mountains, and fascinating wildlife including the incredible orangutan… it’s not to be missed!

Cancer Fund for Children is thrilled to invite you to take part in this experience of a lifetime through the jungle paths of Borneo, conquering the summit of Mt. Kinabalu, and visiting the incredible Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary at the end of the trek.

Most importantly, you will be taking on this challenge to support families across Ireland living with cancer. With your support, we can make sure families don’t have to face cancer alone. With the sponsorship money you raise, you will help us provide children and families with vital emotional and practical support at one of the darkest times of their lives. It simply isn’t possible without people like you by our side.

This spectacular 10-day challenge includes 5 days of trekking taking you from the capital, Kota Kinabalu, through jungle paths and into the foothills of Southeast Asia’s highest peak, and then finally conquering the summit of Mt. Kinabalu. Following completion of the trek, we will also visit the amazing Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. You will meet the people of Borneo that are friendly, warm, and humorous and take part in some of their local customs that have grown from a fascinating mix of 25 different ethnic groups.

Trek Borneo highlights:

  • Trek through tropical jungle landscape, rubber and fruit plantations, rice paddies, farms, and villages, you will meet local villagers along the way and experience their local customs and cuisine.
  • Stay in the welcoming Kintoki and Gompito Jungle Camps, falling asleep to beautiful surroundings and the sounds of the vibrant jungle. Gompito means “Conserving Heritage for Future Generations” and our support in using the facilities goes directly to these social enterprise projects.
  • Take in the spectacular views, and experience jungle vegetation and exotic wildlife as you climb enter Mt. Kinabalu National Park and tackle Mt. Kinabalu summit, one of Southeast Asia’s highest mountains.
  • Capture wonderful photos from the summit of Mt. Kinabalu at 4,095m high where you will be rewarded by glorious views from the peak.
  • Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary at feeding time and, if the apes feel comfortable, there is every possibility that some of the younger ones will come down to play amongst us!

You must:

  • Be 18 years and older
  • Have a good level of fitness and be willing to do additional training – this is classed as a moderate+ / tough trek and training is essential to be able to complete the route and enjoy the challenge
  • Be committed to raising the minimum sponsorship amount of £4,250
  • Have a sense of adventure!

As a Cancer Fund for Children trekker, you will receive:

But the most important thing you will get from this whole experience?

Knowing how much of an impact you will have on thousands of young people across Ireland as they, and their families, navigate their difficult cancer journeys. Funds raised will help our team of Cancer Support Specialists provide a range of practical and emotional support on the hospital ward, in the family home, and at Daisy Lodge, our free therapeutic short break centre at the foothill of the Mourne Mountains in Newcastle, Co. Down. With your support, we can be there to help families cope better, feel more connected, and be ready to face whatever challenges may lie ahead on their cancer journey.
