Care Free Choir the Best Medicine
Last year saw the formation of our Care Free Choir; an opportunity for young people living with cancer and their families to come together and sing their hearts out.
It is well documented that singing can have a hugely positive impact on physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and provide a much needed distraction from the business of everyday life. For families impacted by cancer life can quickly become unsettled, chaotic and unpredictable. Managing fear and anxiety can become the everyday norm.
Our Choir is one way Cancer Fund for Children provides support to families to help them manage the unpredictability of a cancer diagnosis, whilst also providing an opportunity to build meaningful peer support networks. The choir is open to young people age eight years old and over, their families, staff and volunteers. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience, confidence and skill levels.
Since starting, we have enjoyed Christmas caroling at Starbucks and a pretty show stopping performance at the Great Gatsby Gala Ball in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. Most importantly, we have enjoyed quality time together, belting out some great tunes and laughing A LOT. As they say – singing is good for the soul and laughter is the best medicine!
Here is just a taste of some of the feedback we have had from our 30 choir members:
“Cancer Fund for Children has been a lifeline for my family. Just knowing they are there when we need them. The Care Free Choir has allowed me to have one night a week to forget my worries and meet people who are going through similar situations”
“This choir goes so much deeper than just belting out the songs. It’s all part of the healing process and is the best therapy out there. I love the choir – our wee Cancer Fund for Children community. We are so grateful to Cancer Fund for Children and so lucky to have you”
