Our Care Free Choir Raises the Roof of the Shelbourne Hotel

 In Group Support, News

On Saturday 28th September Cancer Fund for Children’s Care Free Choir knocked the socks off the guests at our Masquerade Ball which took place in the Shelbourne Hotel Dublin.  The choir’s performance was so good that their encore was auctioned, raising €1000 euro.

Care Free Choir members include young people who have or have had cancer, their siblings, parents, grandparents, and our staff and volunteers who love to come together to sing their hearts out. Joining the choir has been a healing and therapeutic tool for many of the families we support, as well as a welcomed escape from the realities that many families face when impacted by cancer. Furthermore it is a safe and fun space to come together and connect with others, helping to reduce stress and isolation.

Timothy speaking about his experience

Timothy, who is 12 years old and was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, told guests at the Masquerade Ball that joining the choir helped him following his relapse last year. Timothy said,

“When I came out of isolation I was struggling to fit in with people again. Joining the Care Free Choir was one of the first things I was able to do that made me feel like it was good to be with people again, which was great. Making new friends has been amazing too.”

Speaking about the choir’s performance at the Gala event our Cancer Support Specialist, Helen Patterson said,

“The atmosphere was electric; the sense of pride, exhilaration and perhaps most powerfully the sense of hope in the room and amongst choir members was amazing. One choir member commented that they felt ‘fully fulfilled’, whilst another parent told me that they were stuck for words.  They said they were delighted to have the opportunity to perform, to know all the other choir members, and also valued the opportunity to give back to an amazing charity whose wonderful people have helped, and are still helping them.”

The Care Free Choir is open to all family members aged 8 and over who are currently being supported by Cancer Fund f or Children.  All singing abilities welcome.  If you are interested in finding out more please contact helen@cancerfundforchildren.com.

We want to say a massive thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund for supporting the Care Free Choir over the next year with funding from Awards for All!
